Native to South America, it is closely related to guinea pigs and other cavy species. Adult capybaras can weigh between 35 to 66 kilograms (77–146 pounds) and measure about 1.2 meters (4 feet) in length. They have a barrel-shaped body, short legs, slightly webbed feet, and a blunt, square-shaped head.

Capybaras are semi-aquatic and are often found near rivers, lakes, marshes, and swamps. Their webbed feet make them excellent swimmers, and they can even stay submerged underwater for up to five minutes to avoid predators. Their diet is herbivorous, mainly consisting of grasses, aquatic plants, fruits, and occasionally tree bark.

Socially, capybaras are very gregarious animals, living in groups of 10–20 individuals, though sometimes larger aggregations occur. They communicate using a range of vocalizations, including barks, whistles, purrs, and grunts. Despite their large size, capybaras are gentle and docile, which has made them popular in wildlife reserves and, increasingly, as exotic pets in some regions.

Interestingly, they play an important role in their ecosystem by grazing on vegetation, which helps control plant growth, and serving as prey for predators like jaguars, anacondas, and caimans. Capybaras are also known for their unusually friendly interactions with other animals; birds, monkeys, and even smaller mammals sometimes perch on or follow them without fear.

In short, capybaras are giant, social, semi-aquatic rodents, admired for their calm demeanor and adaptability to both land and water environments.
