An Air Elemental in Dungeons & Dragons is a powerful creature composed entirely of swirling wind and invisible force, originating from the Elemental Plane of Air. It embodies the raw essence of air, moving with unnatural speed and precision, often appearing as a howling vortex or a vaguely humanoid form made of swirling clouds and violent gusts. Air Elementals are manifestations of natural forces, typically summoned by powerful magic such as the conjure elemental spell, or encountered in planes and regions heavily influenced by elemental energy.

In combat, Air Elementals are swift and agile, often faster than most creatures. They can fly effortlessly, passing through narrow spaces or even whirling around enemies in their signature move, the Whirlwind. This ability allows them to lift, batter, and hurl creatures, making them not only dangerous opponents but also difficult to pin down. They are immune to many physical constraints due to their insubstantial nature, such as being grappled or restrained, and their amorphous form makes them resistant to mundane attacks.

Air Elementals are neutral in alignment, meaning they don't typically act out of malice or benevolence. However, their chaotic energy and boundless motion can make them unpredictable and dangerous if not carefully controlled. When bound or summoned, they obey their master’s commands, though not always without resistance, especially if the summoner fails to maintain magical control.

They are often associated with deities or beings of air, such as Akadi, the Queen of Air, and may serve in the courts of djinn or other planar entities. In some campaign settings, they are used as guardians, messengers, or even weather manipulators by powerful spellcasters or air-themed civilizations.

Their presence in the Material Plane can cause localized storms, high winds, or strange atmospheric phenomena, making their arrival a dramatic and sometimes terrifying event for mortals unaccustomed to such raw elemental power.
