Dark Elves, or Drow, are a subrace of elves in Dungeons & Dragons, known for their dark skin, white or silver hair, and affinity for the Underdark. They originate from the elven deity Lolth, who led them into exile after a schism with other elves. Now, they inhabit subterranean cities like Menzoberranzan, where their society revolves around Lolth's worship, political scheming, and ruthless ambition.
Drow culture is matriarchal, with powerful priestesses ruling over noble houses. Males are often warriors or wizards, subservient to females. Betrayal and assassination are common, as social mobility depends on eliminating rivals. Most drow distrust outsiders and even their kin, fostering a reputation for cruelty. Despite this, some reject Lolth’s influence, becoming exiles or seeking redemption.
Mechanically, drow possess keen senses, superior darkvision, and innate magical abilities, such as casting dancing lights, faerie fire, and darkness. However, they suffer from sunlight sensitivity, which imposes disadvantages on attack rolls and perception checks in bright light. These traits reflect their adaptation to the Underdark’s perpetual darkness.
Notable drow include Drizzt Do’Urden, the famous renegade hero from R.A. Salvatore’s novels. His rejection of drow society and quest for honor challenged the perception that all drow are inherently evil. This theme appears in many D&D campaigns, offering players the choice to play against type.
Drow remain one of D&D’s most iconic and morally complex races. While many serve Lolth, their deep lore and individual choices make them compelling characters and formidable foes.
