Deep Gnomes, also known as Svirfneblin, are a subterranean subrace of gnomes in Dungeons & Dragons. Unlike their cheerful surface-dwelling kin, Deep Gnomes are reclusive, secretive, and adapted to life in the dangerous depths of the Underdark. Their skin is typically stone gray or earthy brown, allowing them to blend into the rocky environment, and their eyes are often shades of opalescent grey or pale blue. Life in the Underdark has shaped them into a hardy people who are naturally cautious, suspicious of outsiders, and constantly vigilant. This is a necessity, as they must contend with threats such as drow, mind flayers, and worse.

Despite their grim environment and somber demeanour, Deep Gnomes still possess the cleverness and technical brilliance common to all gnomes. They are expert miners, stonecutters, and illusionists, often crafting intricate traps and hidden settlements deep within the stone. Their magic tends to favour utility and stealth over flashiness—typically relying on illusions to hide themselves or mislead enemies. Many are skilled in crafting magic items or alchemical concoctions, and their society often places high value on secrecy and survival rather than conquest or expansion.

Svirfneblin society tends to be communal and tightly knit, with individuals trained from a young age to put the safety of their clan above their personal desires. They are governed by practical elders and often follow strict codes designed to keep their presence hidden from the many hostile forces of the Underdark. Religion among Deep Gnomes often centres around Callarduran Smoothhands, a god of stone, mining, and protection. His influence encourages careful craftsmanship, patience, and an enduring connection to the deep earth.

In gameplay terms, Deep Gnomes often have abilities such as superior darkvision, innate resistance to magic, and natural stealth. These traits make them excellent rogues, wizards, or rangers, especially in subterranean campaigns. Despite their aloofness, Deep Gnomes can form deep friendships with those who earn their trust, and their loyalty runs as deep as the caverns they call home.
