In Dungeons & Dragons, a gargoyle is a malevolent creature of elemental origin, usually associated with the Elemental Plane of Earth. It is a medium-sized monstrosity made of stone, resembling the grotesque statues that adorn gothic architecture. In the multiverse of D&D, these creatures are not constructs or enchanted statues, but living, breathing entities—though they do not breathe, eat, or sleep in the conventional sense. They are often used as guardians and ambushers, lying in wait among ordinary statues, where their stony skin and motionless forms allow them to blend seamlessly into their surroundings.
Gargoyles are sadistic and cruel. They take great pleasure in tormenting other creatures, especially those weaker than themselves. Though not particularly intelligent, they are cunning in their use of stealth and positioning, often waiting silently for hours or days before striking. Their natural armor makes them difficult to damage, and they possess resistance to nonmagical weapons, making them a tough foe for unprepared adventurers. Their ability to fly gives them an additional tactical edge, particularly in confined spaces like ruins, cathedrals, or subterranean caverns.
These creatures are often bound into service by powerful spellcasters, demon lords, or elemental beings such as the archomental Ogremoch. While not inherently lawful or bound by loyalty, gargoyles will serve if it gives them access to prey or allows them to indulge their violent tendencies. Their nature makes them ideal for guarding places of importance, ancient tombs, or forbidden temples. Many gargoyles form territorial packs and are known to turn on their masters if neglected or insulted.
Gargoyles are drawn to dark, ruined places—anywhere they can perch undisturbed and spy upon trespassers. Their patient nature, combined with a taste for flesh and cruelty, makes them a recurring threat in D&D campaigns, especially in environments where silence and darkness are on their side.
