A Grave Cleric in Dungeons & Dragons is a divine spellcaster who serves a deity concerned with the natural balance between life and death. Introduced in Xanathar's Guide to Everything, the Grave Domain represents the sanctity of death and opposes both those who seek to defy it through undeath and those who kill without meaning. Grave Clerics are not morbid or obsessed with death; instead, they are protectors of the natural order, ensuring that death comes at the right time and is respected, not exploited.
Mechanically, the Grave Domain grants abilities centered around detecting the near-dead, preventing unnecessary deaths, and punishing enemies who teeter on the brink of dying. From the very beginning at 1st level, Grave Clerics gain the ability Circle of Mortality, allowing them to heal the dying more effectively. Any healing spell they cast on a creature at 0 hit points restores the maximum possible amount, making them extraordinarily good at bringing allies back from the brink. They also gain Eyes of the Grave, which lets them detect undead in a radius, reinforcing their role as vigilant defenders against forces that pervert death.
At higher levels, their abilities grow more impactful. The 2nd-level domain feature, Path to the Grave, lets them curse a creature as an action, causing it to become vulnerable to the next source of damage it takes. This can drastically amplify the impact of a coordinated strike. Their domain spells also emphasize death, control, and healing, including spells like Ray of Enfeeblement, Revivify, and Guardian of Faith.
Grave Clerics are thematically powerful for players who want to play a solemn guardian or spiritual guide—one who reveres life but understands the peace of death. They embody mercy, judgment, and reverence, making them ideal characters in campaigns that explore morality, mortality, or undeath.
