Grungs are small, frog-like humanoids in Dungeons & Dragons, known for their vibrant colors and toxic skin. Originating in the Volo’s Guide to Monsters supplement, these amphibious creatures dwell in jungle canopies and are fiercely territorial. They live in rigid caste-based societies where a grung’s skin color determines its rank and role. Green grungs are the lowest caste, often laborers, while gold grungs serve as leaders and elite warriors. Their skin secretes poison, which can paralyze or influence creatures they touch, making them formidable opponents and cunning slavers.

Grungs are natural climbers and excellent leapers, capable of navigating dense jungle environments with ease. Their ability to breathe both air and water allows them to thrive in aquatic and land-based settings. They speak their own language, which consists of chirps and croaks, and they view most other species as inferior. This arrogance, combined with their rigid hierarchy, makes them difficult to integrate into adventuring parties, though player-character grungs can break from these norms.

As a playable race, introduced in One Grung Above, they possess heightened dexterity, proficiency in athletics and perception, and their poisonous touch remains a defining trait. They also require frequent immersion in water, adding a unique survival element to roleplaying them.

Grungs are often depicted as villains in jungle-themed campaigns, serving as merciless hunters, slavers, or guardians of ancient ruins. Their poison abilities, combined with their tactical intelligence, make them a dangerous challenge for adventurers. While small in stature, their agility and lethal defenses make them a serious threat, whether encountered as enemies or played as an exotic and challenging race.
