A Hot Foot in Dungeons & Dragons typically refers to a minor prank or mischief-based spell effect, often invented or adapted by players or Dungeon Masters for comic relief or creative utility. While not part of the core rulebooks as an official spell or creature, the term “Hot Foot” has appeared informally in campaigns and homebrew content, usually describing a fiery trick that sets a character’s foot alight or causes them to feel sudden, intense heat in their footwear. This leads to a hopping, dancing, or panicked reaction — humorous for the onlookers, but uncomfortable for the target.
The most common implementation mimics the effects of spells like Prestidigitation or Thaumaturgy, allowing minor magical effects that can warm objects, create harmless sensory experiences, or momentarily alter the environment. A Hot Foot might be a practical joke involving a magically heated boot sole, causing a surprised victim to leap up suddenly or dance around to shake off the sensation. Mechanically, it might inflict a single point of fire damage or impose a short-lived distraction, enough to break concentration or alert nearby enemies due to the commotion.
In a more elaborate form, a Hot Foot could be a homebrewed cantrip or trap trigger. Rogues and bards might delight in laying magical tricks to entertain themselves or disorient enemies without lethal consequences. Some DMs allow a version of the prank that causes the target to make a Dexterity saving throw to avoid hopping about for a round, losing movement or suffering disadvantage on Stealth checks.
Because it isn’t standardized, a Hot Foot’s effects depend entirely on how a DM wants to interpret the joke. It can be a harmless gag or a minor magical trap used for crowd control, interrogation, or simple revenge in a tavern brawl. Regardless, the Hot Foot remains a light-hearted, slapstick piece of D&D culture rooted in player creativity.
