A Scarecrow in Dungeons & Dragons is a malevolent construct animated by dark magic, typically built from straw, rags, and wood. Though it mimics the appearance of a harmless field guardian, a Scarecrow is anything but benign. These creatures are usually created by evil spellcasters or dark deities who imbue the scarecrow with a bound spirit—often the soul of a demon, fey, or restless undead. This unholy fusion gives the Scarecrow unnatural life and a deep hatred for the living.

Scarecrows are often used as guardians, especially in remote or cursed regions where more overt protectors might attract attention. They require no sustenance or rest, can remain motionless for years, and are perfectly suited for ambushes. When dormant, they are indistinguishable from a normal scarecrow, allowing them to catch intruders by surprise. Once animated, they reveal their true nature with glowing eyes and jerky, unnatural movements, their wooden claws capable of rending flesh.

One of a Scarecrow’s most feared abilities is its terrifying gaze. A creature that meets its eyes risks becoming paralyzed with fear, leaving them vulnerable to attack. This fear effect is magical and difficult to resist without strong willpower. The Scarecrow is also particularly dangerous to those with weaker mental fortitude, often preying on common folk or low-level adventurers.

Despite being constructs, Scarecrows are vulnerable to fire, as their bodies are largely flammable. However, they are resistant or immune to many other forms of harm, such as poison and necrotic damage. They cannot speak or think creatively but can follow instructions and recognize their creators, whom they will never harm.

In a narrative sense, Scarecrows serve as atmospheric threats in horror-themed adventures or haunted locales, especially when encountered in eerie farmlands, abandoned villages, or cursed groves. Their blend of mundane appearance and supernatural menace makes them classic, chilling foes.
