In Dungeons & Dragons, a Shadow is an undead creature born from dark magic or lingering evil. Typically found in gloomy dungeons, haunted ruins, or cursed battlegrounds, Shadows are incorporeal entities that exist in the ethereal veil between life and death. They are manifestations of darkness and sorrow, often formed from the remnants of a mortal who died under tragic, violent, or particularly evil circumstances. These creatures resent the living and seek to extinguish the spark of life wherever they find it.

Shadows are particularly dangerous due to their ability to sap the strength of their victims. When they strike, they deal necrotic damage and reduce a creature’s Strength score. If this reduction brings a creature’s Strength to zero, the target dies and, in many editions, rises shortly thereafter as a new Shadow under the control of the one that killed it. This makes them especially terrifying foes, as a single Shadow can rapidly turn a skirmish into a deadly infestation if not contained. Their incorporeal nature allows them to pass through walls and solid matter, making escape or hiding nearly impossible. Physical weapons that are not magical or silvered often pass harmlessly through them.

While Shadows are usually low- to mid-tier threats, their strength-draining ability can be devastating in the right circumstances. A party unprepared for such a creature, especially one relying on physical prowess, can find itself overwhelmed. Clerics and paladins, with their divine magic and radiant damage, are often best equipped to combat Shadows. Thematically, they serve as excellent narrative tools to represent a cursed location, a villain’s lingering influence, or the consequences of unchecked dark magic. Their eerie presence, silent movement, and chilling touch evoke primal fears, making them a staple of gothic horror and dark fantasy within the D&D universe.
