A Steeder in Dungeons & Dragons is a monstrous, spider-like creature primarily associated with the Underdark, an immense subterranean world beneath the surface of many D&D campaign settings. These creatures resemble oversized spiders with long, sinewy legs and a tough exoskeleton. However, unlike natural spiders, Steeders have features that set them apart, such as their eerie bioluminescent eyes and an unnatural intelligence. Steeders are not just beasts—they are often bred and trained by other Underdark denizens for specific purposes, particularly as mounts.
Steeders are most commonly used by the duergar, a race of gray dwarves that inhabit the Underdark. Duergar society, known for its militaristic and grim efficiency, values Steeders for their climbing abilities, speed, and resilience. With the ability to cling to walls and ceilings, Steeders allow their riders to engage in three-dimensional combat in the twisting tunnels and vertical caverns of the Underdark, providing a tactical advantage that few surface creatures can match.
There are two primary types of Steeders noted in D&D materials: the male and the female. The female Steeder is significantly larger and used as a war mount. She is more aggressive, stronger, and can deliver devastating charges by leaping from walls or ceilings onto enemies. The male Steeder is smaller and more agile, often used as a scout mount or for messengers. Both variants have spider-like climbing abilities and are immune to certain mind-altering effects, making them ideal for the hostile and magically volatile terrain they call home.
While Steeders are not typically encountered on the surface world, they can become memorable foes or mounts in Underdark campaigns. Their monstrous appearance and unusual mobility make them a unique challenge for adventurers. Whether they are faced as enemies in the service of duergar or tamed as mounts by daring characters, Steeders add a distinct flavor to Underdark encounters.
