A Succubus in Dungeons & Dragons is a fiendish creature known for its ability to seduce, deceive, and manipulate mortals. Typically classified as a demon or devil, depending on the edition and lore, a Succubus thrives on temptation and corruption rather than direct combat. These entities use their supernatural charm, shapeshifting abilities, and mind-affecting magic to control others, often acting as spies, infiltrators, or consorts to powerful figures.
In combat, a Succubus is not a frontline fighter but a master of enchantment and subterfuge. Their most infamous ability is their Charm feature, allowing them to bend the will of mortals, making victims view them as trusted allies or lovers. They can also telepathically communicate, ensuring that their influence extends beyond spoken words. Their Etherealness ability lets them shift between the Material and Ethereal Planes, making them difficult to capture or kill. The Draining Kiss, a deadly and intimate attack, saps the life force from a creature, dealing psychic damage while leaving the victim weakened.
Succubi (and their male counterparts, Incubi) do not exist solely for destruction but for manipulation, thriving in court intrigue, cults, and places where power can be subtly twisted. They often serve greater fiendish overlords or act independently, seeking to amass influence over mortals. Unlike some fiends, they are not bound to war or chaos but to corruption, gradually turning their victims toward dark desires.
In various editions, their exact nature shifts between demonic (associated with the Abyss) and diabolic (servants of devils in the Nine Hells). Regardless of allegiance, a Succubus remains a creature of temptation and danger, preying on emotions rather than brute strength, making them one of the most insidious fiends a party can encounter.
