A Swarm of Bats in Dungeons & Dragons is a creature composed of numerous tiny bats acting as a single entity. These swarms are treated as one monster in the game, representing a chaotic mass rather than individual creatures. Found most often in caves, dungeons, or shadowy wilderness areas, they are usually encountered in environments where darkness and echoing caverns make them difficult to detect until it’s too late. The swarm moves and attacks as a single unit, overwhelming opponents with sheer numbers rather than individual strength.
Mechanically, a Swarm of Bats is classified as a Small beast with the swarm trait. In D&D 5th Edition, swarms cannot regain hit points and are resistant to many forms of damage. They cannot be charmed, frightened, grappled, or knocked prone, reflecting their amorphous, buzzing, and fluttering nature. A swarm can occupy another creature’s space and vice versa, making it particularly troublesome in combat. Instead of using claws or weapons, the swarm bites at enemies, inflicting damage as a cloud of fangs and wings descends on its target. Their inability to use tools or magic is offset by their mobility and resistance to conventional attacks.
Swarms of Bats are blind but have blindsight, allowing them to navigate and detect threats using echolocation. This makes them immune to effects that rely on sight, such as illusions or darkness spells. However, if they are deafened, they lose their primary means of perceiving their surroundings, severely impairing their effectiveness. Their flight allows them to traverse difficult terrain and avoid many ground-based hazards, giving them a tactical edge in the right environment.
In roleplay scenarios, Swarms of Bats can serve as guardians of ancient tombs, minions of vampire lords, or natural hazards in the wilderness. Their eerie, unpredictable nature can create tension and chaos, especially in confined or dimly lit spaces.
