A Wereraven in Dungeons & Dragons is a type of lycanthrope—a creature that can shift between humanoid and animal forms—but unlike the more infamous werewolves, wereravens are generally benevolent. These shapeshifters can alternate between three forms: a humanoid form (usually their original race), a raven form, and a hybrid form that combines human and raven characteristics. In their hybrid state, wereravens might have wings, talons, and a beak, while retaining a mostly humanoid shape. Unlike many lycanthropes who succumb to bestial instincts or evil tendencies, wereravens often work toward good-aligned goals and maintain a strong sense of morality.
Wereravens are secretive and cautious by nature, rarely revealing their true identities. They tend to live in small, tightly-knit communities and are known for their intelligence, insight, and careful observation of the world around them. Their affinity for ravens gives them access to excellent scouting capabilities, and they often use these talents to watch over regions plagued by evil. This makes them natural spies and informants, particularly in gothic horror settings like Ravenloft, where they often oppose the forces of darkness from the shadows.
One of the most notable appearances of wereravens is in Curse of Strahd, a 5th Edition adventure set in the domain of Barovia. In this setting, a family of wereravens forms the Keepers of the Feather, a secretive resistance group working against the vampire lord Strahd von Zarovich. They assist the player characters discreetly, offering aid, information, and occasional combat support. Their resistance network highlights the wereravens’ central role as guardians of hope in an otherwise grim and oppressive land.
Mechanically, wereravens are immune to nonmagical weapons that aren’t silvered and retain their intelligence and alignment when transformed, which makes them distinct from more feral lycanthropes. Their shapechanging and flight abilities make them highly mobile and versatile, especially useful in espionage or support roles.
