Its name means “woodland lizard,” derived from the Greek words hylē (meaning “forest” or “wood”) and sauros (meaning “lizard”). It was first discovered in the early nineteenth century in the Wealden Beds of southern England by the geologist Gideon Mantell, who described it in 1833. The discovery of Hylaeosaurus was historically significant because it was one of the very first dinosaurs ever named, alongside Iguanodon and Megalosaurus, and it played a key role in shaping early ideas about what dinosaurs were.

Physically, Hylaeosaurus was a medium-sized ankylosaur, a member of the Thyreophora, the “shield bearers,” a group of dinosaurs characterised by their extensive body armour. It is estimated to have been around four to five metres long and built low to the ground, with a broad, robust body supported by sturdy limbs. Its back and sides were covered in thick, bony plates known as osteoderms, which formed a protective carapace. These osteoderms varied in size and shape, some being small, rounded nodules and others elongated spines. The most distinctive feature of Hylaeosaurus was the series of large, pointed spines that projected from its shoulders and neck, providing formidable defence against predators.
