This medium-sized breed has been used for centuries to herd sheep and cattle on the plains of Hungary, where its agility, intelligence, and stamina made it an invaluable working companion.

A Puli’s appearance is striking: its coat naturally forms cords as the dog matures, usually beginning around 9–12 months of age. These cords can grow long enough to cover the entire body, even obscuring the eyes, though the dog sees just fine beneath the hair. The coat is dense, weather-resistant, and provides protection from both harsh climates and potential predators when working in the field. Coat colors are typically black, though white, gray, or a rare golden shade called “fako” also occur.

In temperament, the Puli is energetic, lively, and highly intelligent. It is known for quick reflexes and a bounding, almost springy gait, which helped it dart around livestock with ease. Because of its working heritage, the breed thrives on having a task or engaging activity. Left without mental or physical stimulation, it may become restless or mischievous. Pulik (the plural in Hungarian) are also deeply loyal and form strong bonds with their families, making them excellent companions as well as guardians.

Training a Puli is usually straightforward because they are quick learners, but they can also be independent thinkers, so consistent and positive reinforcement works best. Their coat requires careful maintenance: while it does not shed in the typical way, the cords need regular separation and cleaning to prevent matting and to ensure the dog stays comfortable.

Today, Pulik are still used as herding dogs in some places, but they are also valued as family pets and show dogs worldwide. Their unique appearance, lively personality, and rich cultural history make them one of the most distinctive breeds in the canine world.
