An African elephant is the largest land animal on Earth, native to sub-Saharan Africa. There are two distinct species: the African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana), which is the larger of the two, and the African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis), which is smaller and primarily found in dense rainforests. African elephants are distinguished from their Asian relatives by their larger ears, which resemble the shape of the African continent, and their more concave backs. Both male and female African elephants typically have tusks, unlike Asian elephants where only some males do.

African elephants are herbivores, feeding on grasses, leaves, bark, and fruit, and they play a crucial role in their ecosystems by shaping landscapes and dispersing seeds. They live in matriarchal social groups led by an older female, while adult males usually live solitary lives or form loose bachelor groups. Highly intelligent, African elephants are known for their complex social behavior, memory, and ability to use tools. They communicate using a wide range of sounds, some of which are infrasonic and can travel several kilometers.

Unfortunately, African elephants face severe threats from poaching for ivory and habitat loss due to human expansion. Conservation efforts, including anti-poaching patrols and protected reserves, are critical for their survival. Adult African bush elephants can weigh up to 6,000 kilograms (about 13,000 pounds) and reach heights of up to 3.3 meters (11 feet) at the shoulder, while forest elephants are smaller, typically under 2.5 meters (8 feet) tall and lighter.

They are not only ecological keystones but also hold cultural significance in African traditions, symbolizing strength, wisdom, and longevity.
