Traditionally, the breed was used to hunt large game such as bear, elk, and boar, relying on its strength, endurance, and protective instincts. In Japanese culture, the Akita is considered a symbol of health, happiness, and long life, often represented in small figurines given to people as good-luck charms.
Physically, the Akita is a striking breed, with a broad head, erect triangular ears, and a curled tail that rests over its back. It has a thick double coat designed to withstand harsh winters, which sheds heavily twice a year. Coat colors vary and may include white, brindle, sesame, or pinto. The breed has a strong, muscular build that conveys both elegance and power, and it carries itself with quiet confidence.
