An Alabai is a large, powerful dog breed, also known as the Central Asian Shepherd Dog. It originates from countries like Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan, where it has been bred for thousands of years to guard livestock, property, and people. Alabais are considered one of the oldest and most resilient livestock guardian breeds in the world.

Physically, Alabais are massive and muscular, with a broad chest, strong legs, and a thick double coat that protects them from harsh weather. They typically weigh between 88–176 pounds (40–80 kg), though some males can be heavier, and stand 24–32 inches (60–80 cm) tall. Their coat can be short, medium, or long, often in white, fawn, sable, gray, or brindle colors.

Temperament-wise, Alabais are highly protective, intelligent, and independent, making them excellent guard dogs. They are known for being calm and patient with their family but wary of strangers, so early socialization is essential. Due to their independent nature, they are not the easiest dogs to train for inexperienced owners—they require firm, consistent guidance.

Historically, these dogs were vital to nomadic herders, protecting sheep and cattle from predators like wolves and bears. Today, they are still used as livestock guardians in Central Asia, and increasingly, as protective companion dogs worldwide.

In short, an Alabai is a mighty, ancient, and protective dog breed, valued for strength, courage, and loyalty.
