An alpaca is a domesticated mammal from South America, closely related to the llama, vicuña, and guanaco. They are part of the camelid family, meaning they share a distant relation to camels, though they do not have humps. Alpacas are primarily bred for their soft and luxurious wool, which is highly prized for making clothing, blankets, and textiles. Their wool comes in a wide range of natural colors, including white, brown, black, and gray, and it is warmer and lighter than sheep’s wool.

Alpacas are relatively small and gentle animals, usually standing about 3 feet tall at the shoulders and weighing between 100 and 200 pounds. They have long necks, large expressive eyes, and a rounded, fluffy body. Social animals by nature, alpacas live in herds and communicate with each other using body language, ear positions, and a variety of sounds, such as humming.

There are two main breeds of alpacas: the Huacaya, which has dense, fluffy wool that gives it a teddy bear-like appearance, and the Suri, which has long, silky, and wavy fleece that hangs in locks. Alpacas are herbivores, feeding primarily on grass, hay, and sometimes leaves. They are gentle, curious, and intelligent, making them relatively easy to care for.

Unlike llamas, which are often used as pack animals, alpacas are not suited for carrying heavy loads—they are valued for their fiber and companionship rather than labor. They also have a calm temperament, making them popular in petting farms, therapy programs, and small-scale farming.

In short, an alpaca is a soft-furred, herd-loving South American mammal prized for its wool and gentle nature.

This Bust is 15cm tall.
