The American Bulldog is a strong, athletic, and loyal breed of dog that originated in the United States. It descends from the Old English Bulldog, which was brought to America by working-class immigrants in the 17th and 18th centuries. These dogs were valued as versatile farm dogs, used for guarding property, hunting wild game like boar, and helping with farm work such as catching cattle or hogs. Unlike many bulldog breeds that were bred down for appearance, the American Bulldog retained much of its original working-dog character.
Physically, the American Bulldog is muscular and powerful, with a stocky yet agile build. Males usually weigh between 75–125 pounds (34–57 kg), while females are slightly smaller. They have broad chests, strong jaws, and a confident stance. Their coat is short and smooth, most often white with patches of brindle, brown, or black, though solid and varied colorations exist. The breed has two common types: the Johnson type, which is larger and more heavily built, and the Scott type, which is leaner and more athletic. Many modern American Bulldogs are a blend of the two.
In terms of temperament, American Bulldogs are known for being loyal, protective, and affectionate toward their families. They tend to be confident and courageous, making them excellent guard dogs, but they are also playful and good with children when properly socialized.
