The American Bulldog is a powerful, athletic, and loyal breed of dog that traces its roots back to the working bulldogs brought to America by immigrants in the 17th and 18th centuries. Originally bred for farm work, they were used as guardians, cattle catchers, and general-purpose working dogs. Over time, they became known for their strength, endurance, and protective instincts. Unlike the smaller and stockier English Bulldog, the American Bulldog is larger, more agile, and closer in appearance to the original working bulldogs of Europe.

Physically, they are muscular and strong, with a broad chest, sturdy frame, and a confident stance. Males typically weigh between 75 to 100 pounds, while females usually range from 60 to 80 pounds. Their coat is short, smooth, and low-maintenance, commonly appearing in white, brindle, brown, or a mix of these colors. They have a strong jaw, expressive eyes, and an alert expression that reflects their attentive nature.

In temperament, American Bulldogs are known for their devotion to their families. They are protective without being overly aggressive when properly trained and socialized. Their loyalty makes them excellent watchdogs, as they are naturally wary of strangers but affectionate and gentle with their household members. They tend to bond closely with children and can be playful, though their size and strength mean supervision is wise around small kids. With proper training, they can live harmoniously with other pets, but their guarding instincts and sometimes dominant personality may require firm, consistent guidance.

Because they are high-energy and intelligent, American Bulldogs need plenty of exercise, training, and mental stimulation. Long walks, play sessions, and tasks that challenge their minds help keep them balanced. Without enough activity, they can become bored and destructive. Their history as working dogs means they thrive when given a role or purpose.
