In Greek mythology, Artemis is one of the most important and complex goddesses. She is the daughter of Zeus, the king of the gods, and Leto, a Titaness, and the twin sister of Apollo, the god of the sun, music, and prophecy. Artemis is primarily known as the goddess of the hunt, wilderness, wild animals, and the moon. She is often depicted as a youthful, athletic woman carrying a bow and a quiver of arrows, sometimes accompanied by deer or hunting dogs.

Artemis is a virgin goddess and strongly associated with chastity, independence, and protection of the young, especially girls and infants. She was seen as a guardian of women’s transitions, such as childbirth, although she could also bring sudden death with her arrows, reflecting her dual role as a protector and a punisher.

Unlike many gods who dwell in cities, Artemis is connected to untamed nature—forests, mountains, and rivers. She values freedom and is often portrayed roaming the wilderness, accompanied by nymphs who serve her. Myths about her highlight her fierce sense of justice, as seen in stories where she punishes those who offend her, like Actaeon, who saw her bathing, and Niobe, who insulted her mother Leto.

Artemis also has lunar associations, sometimes connected with Selene, the personification of the moon, which emphasizes her role in cycles, femininity, and night-time hunting. She embodies independence, strength, and the untamed aspects of nature, representing a balance between nurturing life and unleashing the power of death.
