The Australian Kelpie is a highly intelligent and energetic herding dog that originated in Australia during the 19th century. Bred from British working collies brought to the continent, the Kelpie was developed to handle the harsh climate and vast landscapes of rural Australia. Its primary purpose was to herd sheep and cattle with minimal supervision, making it an indispensable companion for farmers and stockmen. Agile, tireless, and incredibly focused, the Kelpie is capable of working long hours in extreme conditions, often covering great distances while keeping livestock in line with remarkable precision.
Physically, the Australian Kelpie is a medium-sized dog with a lean, muscular build that reflects its athletic nature. It typically stands between 43 and 51 centimetres at the shoulder and weighs between 14 and 21 kilograms. Its coat is short, weather-resistant, and comes in a variety of colours including black, red, chocolate, fawn, black and tan, and red and tan. The breed’s expressive eyes and alert, upright ears give it a sharp, intelligent appearance that mirrors its keen awareness in the field.
