The Australian Shepherd, often simply called an “Aussie,” is a medium-sized working dog breed best known for its intelligence, energy, and loyalty. Despite its name, the breed was actually developed in the United States during the 19th century, not in Australia. Ranchers and farmers in the American West valued these dogs for their incredible herding ability, stamina, and adaptability, especially when managing livestock such as sheep and cattle. Their misleading name likely comes from their association with Basque shepherds who emigrated to the U.S. from Australia, bringing with them dogs that helped shape the breed.

Australian Shepherds are highly athletic, with a strong, muscular build and a thick double coat that can be straight or slightly wavy. Their coat comes in a variety of colors, most commonly blue merle, red merle, black, or red, often paired with striking white and copper markings. One of the breed’s most famous features is its eyes, which can be blue, brown, amber, or even two different colors, giving many Aussies a piercing, unique look. Their tails are often naturally bobbed or docked short, giving them a compact and alert appearance.

Temperament-wise, Aussies are exceptionally intelligent, eager to please, and quick learners. This makes them well-suited for obedience, agility, and all manner of dog sports. They are happiest when given a job to do, whether that’s herding, competing, or engaging in mentally stimulating games. Without enough physical and mental activity, however, they can become restless or destructive, which is why they thrive in active households that can keep up with their energy.

Australian Shepherds are also known for being loyal and protective, often forming strong bonds with their families. They can be a little reserved with strangers, though not usually aggressive, and their natural herding instincts sometimes extend to people, especially children, as they may try to “herd” them by gently nipping or circling. With proper training and socialization, they become affectionate, dependable companions who balance working drive with family devotion.

This Bust is 15cm tall.
