A Blood Hound can refer to a few different things depending on context, but most commonly it refers to the dog breed. The Bloodhound is a large scent hound originally bred for tracking humans. They are famous for their extraordinary sense of smell, considered one of the most acute of any dog, which allows them to follow a scent trail even days old over long distances. Their droopy ears and loose, wrinkled skin actually help trap scent particles and guide them toward the dog’s nose, making them exceptional trackers. Historically, Bloodhounds were used by law enforcement and search-and-rescue teams, and they are still widely employed for tracking missing persons or fugitives today.

Physically, they are large dogs, often weighing between 80–110 pounds, with a muscular build and long, drooping ears. They are gentle, affectionate, and intelligent, but can be stubborn because their tracking instinct is so strong—they tend to follow a scent wherever it leads, sometimes ignoring commands.

In non-literal contexts, "bloodhound" is often used metaphorically to describe a person with an intense or relentless ability to track, find, or investigate something, like a “detective with the persistence of a bloodhound.”
