A Bloodhound is a large breed of scent hound originally bred for tracking people, animals, or lost objects over long distances. It is one of the most famous tracking dogs in the world, celebrated for its extraordinary sense of smell, which is considered the most powerful of any dog breed. Bloodhounds can follow a scent trail that is days old, even across water or rough terrain, and their evidence has historically been admissible in courts for criminal investigations.
Physically, Bloodhounds are large and muscular, often weighing between 36 to 50 kilograms (80 to 110 pounds). They have loose, wrinkled skin, long drooping ears, and a distinctive, solemn-looking face. Their long ears and folds of skin help trap scent particles near their nose, amplifying their tracking ability. Coat colors are typically black and tan, liver and tan, or solid red.
In temperament, Bloodhounds are generally gentle, affectionate, and good-natured, especially with children. They are intelligent and determined, though often described as stubborn, since once they catch a scent, their focus is extremely difficult to break. This makes them superb trackers but sometimes challenging household pets, as they may follow a trail for miles if not kept secure.
Bloodhounds have been used for centuries in law enforcement, search and rescue, and even tracking wounded game. Their sense of smell is said to be several thousand times stronger than that of humans, allowing them to distinguish and remember individual scents with astonishing accuracy.
While devoted and loyal companions, they require consistent training, space to roam, and regular exercise to stay healthy and happy. Their deep, melodious baying voice can also make them quite vocal, which some owners may find challenging in urban settings.
