A bobtail dog most often refers to the Old English Sheepdog, a large, shaggy herding breed that became so strongly associated with the name “bobtail” that the nickname stuck. The breed originally came from England in the 18th century, where it was used to drive cattle and sheep to market. Farmers commonly docked the tails of these dogs to mark them as working animals and to prevent injuries while herding livestock. Over time, this short or missing tail became such a defining feature that the dogs were simply called “bobtails.”

Physically, the Old English Sheepdog is a big, muscular dog covered in a thick, double coat of long, shaggy fur that often obscures its eyes. Its fur is usually gray, blue, or grizzle with white markings, and it requires regular grooming to prevent matting. The dog’s rolling, bear-like gait is another hallmark of the breed. Despite its imposing size, it is generally gentle, affectionate, and good-natured, often called a “nanny dog” for its patience with children.

Not all bobtail dogs are Old English Sheepdogs, though. The word “bobtail” can also describe other breeds that naturally have very short tails, either from genetics or selective breeding. For example, the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog is naturally born with a short tail and was bred for herding in Australia. Similarly, some Pembroke Welsh Corgis and Brittany Spaniels can naturally have bobtails, though in many countries tail docking has historically been used to create the look.

In modern times, tail docking for cosmetic purposes is discouraged or outright banned in many countries, so natural bobtailed breeds are especially prized.
