A Bobtail, also known as the Schapendoes, is a Dutch herding dog breed with a long, shaggy coat and a lively, affectionate personality. Originating in the Netherlands, the breed was traditionally used to herd sheep and cattle, prized for its intelligence, agility, and strong work ethic. Its name “Schapendoes” literally means “sheep dog” in Dutch, reflecting its herding heritage.
Physically, the Bobtail is medium-sized, typically weighing between 18–25 kg (40–55 lbs) and standing about 45–55 cm (18–22 in) at the shoulder. Its most distinctive feature is its dense, long, wavy, and often tousled coat, which can come in shades of gray, black, brown, or a mix with white markings. The coat provides protection against harsh weather, which was essential for a working dog exposed to the elements. Its expressive face, often partially hidden by fur, and lively eyes give it an endearing, almost mischievous appearance.
Temperamentally, Bobtails are energetic, intelligent, and extremely loyal to their families. They are social dogs that enjoy human interaction, making them excellent companions. Because of their herding instincts, they can be alert and responsive, sometimes exhibiting a tendency to herd children or other pets. Early socialization and training are important, as they are smart and independent-minded. They thrive on mental stimulation and regular exercise, including walks, playtime, and activities like agility or obedience training.
Despite being a working breed, Bobtails have adapted well to family life, combining the loyalty and protectiveness of a herding dog with a playful, gentle demeanor. They are generally healthy but benefit from regular grooming due to their thick, long coat, which can mat if neglected. Overall, the Bobtail (Schapendoes) is a versatile, intelligent, and affectionate breed, ideal for active families who can provide both physical activity and mental engagement.
