A Border Collie is a highly intelligent and energetic breed of dog originally developed in the border regions of England and Scotland for herding livestock, particularly sheep. Renowned for their exceptional work ethic and problem-solving skills, Border Collies are often regarded as the most intelligent dog breed. They have a strong instinct to herd, which means they are highly focused and driven, often using intense eye contact—sometimes called “the eye”—to control animals.

Physically, Border Collies are medium-sized dogs, typically weighing between 30 and 45 pounds and standing about 18 to 22 inches tall at the shoulder. They have a dense double coat that can be either smooth or rough and comes in a wide variety of colors, though black-and-white is the most common. Their ears can be fully erect, semi-erect, or even fully dropped, and their athletic build allows for incredible speed, agility, and endurance.

Border Collies excel in activities that challenge their minds and bodies, such as obedience competitions, agility courses, herding trials, and even canine sports like flyball. Because of their high intelligence and energy, they require significant physical exercise and mental stimulation; without it, they may develop behavioral issues such as destructive chewing or excessive barking.

Temperament-wise, Border Collies are typically loyal, alert, and responsive, forming strong bonds with their families. They are often cautious with strangers but gentle and playful with those they know well. While they are highly trainable due to their eagerness to work and please, they are not ideal for casual owners who cannot meet their exercise and mental stimulation needs.
