The BR Standard 4MT Tank Engine number 80080 is a British steam locomotive built as part of the British Railways Standard Class 4MT series. These locomotives were designed in the early 1950s under the direction of R. A. Riddles to provide a versatile and efficient mixed-traffic engine suitable for both passenger and freight work on secondary and branch lines. The “Tank Engine” designation means that it carries its water and coal on the locomotive itself rather than in a separate tender, giving it a more compact and balanced design ideal for short-distance or suburban services where frequent direction changes are required.

Number 80080 was built at Brighton Works in 1954 and is one of a total of 155 locomotives in the 4MT tank class. It features a 2-6-4 wheel arrangement, meaning it has two leading wheels, six driving wheels, and four trailing wheels, which provides good stability and traction. The locomotive produces around 25,000 pounds of tractive effort and is fitted with Walschaerts valve gear, a common and reliable system for controlling steam distribution to the cylinders.

During its working life under British Railways, 80080 was mainly used in the London Midland Region, handling both commuter and local passenger services, as well as light freight duties. It was withdrawn from regular service in 1965 as part of the nationwide move toward diesel and electric traction.

This Locomotive can be seen at North Norfolk Railway
