The British Longhair cat is a domestic breed closely related to the British Shorthair, sharing much of its history and characteristics but distinguished by its luxuriously long, dense coat. It originated in the United Kingdom when Persian cats were crossed with British Shorthairs in the early 20th century. While the British Shorthair became firmly established as a standard breed, the longhaired offspring were not initially recognized and often regarded as a byproduct of breeding. Over time, however, these cats developed their own identity and are now recognized in many cat fancier organizations as a distinct breed.
In appearance, the British Longhair is a medium-to-large, solidly built cat with a broad chest, muscular body, and rounded head. It has large, expressive round eyes, typically copper or gold in color, although shades of blue or green may appear depending on coat color. Its defining feature is the plush, semi-long coat, which feels thick and soft, giving the cat a teddy-bear-like appearance. This coat comes in a wide range of colors and patterns, from solid blues and creams to tabbies, bi-colors, and even colorpoints.
Temperamentally, the British Longhair is calm, affectionate, and dignified. Much like its shorthaired cousin, it tends to be a gentle companion rather than an overly active or demanding one. These cats are known for being loyal to their families but not overly clingy, often enjoying quiet companionship and preferring to observe from a comfortable spot rather than seeking constant attention. Their easygoing nature makes them well-suited to indoor life, and they generally get along well with children and other pets if properly introduced.
Caring for a British Longhair requires regular grooming due to its thick coat, which can mat if neglected. Weekly brushing is usually sufficient, though more frequent grooming may be needed during seasonal shedding. With proper care, they are a robust and long-lived breed, often reaching 12–16 years of age.
