A bunny rabbit, often simply called a “bunny,” is a small mammal in the family Leporidae, which also includes hares. It is most commonly associated with the species Oryctolagus cuniculus, the European rabbit, which is the ancestor of most domestic rabbits. Bunnies are known for their soft fur, long ears, short fluffy tails, and strong hind legs adapted for hopping. They are herbivores, feeding mainly on grasses, vegetables, and leafy plants, and they have continuously growing teeth that require constant gnawing to stay at a manageable length.
Bunnies are highly social and often live in groups in burrows or warrens, which they dig for shelter and protection. They are crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk, using their keen senses of smell, hearing, and vision to detect predators. Reproduction is notable for its speed: female rabbits, called does, can have multiple litters per year, each with several kits (baby rabbits).
In culture, “bunny” is a term of endearment often used to describe their cute, harmless appearance, and they frequently appear in folklore, literature, and as symbols of fertility and springtime, such as the Easter Bunny. In domestic settings, bunnies are popular pets, requiring a diet rich in hay and vegetables, plenty of space to exercise, and social interaction.
In short, a bunny rabbit is a small, herbivorous, social mammal famous for its hopping, long ears, and gentle demeanor, both in the wild and as a beloved pet.
