A chinchilla is a small rodent native to the Andes mountains in South America, primarily found in Chile. They are most well-known for their extremely soft and dense fur, which has made them highly valued historically—and unfortunately led to them being overhunted in the wild. A single hair follicle can produce over 50 fine hairs, making their coat one of the densest in the animal kingdom, which helps them survive the cold mountainous environment.
Chinchillas are nocturnal and crepuscular, meaning they are most active during the night and twilight hours. They are social animals that live in colonies in the wild and communicate with various vocalizations, like squeaks and chirps. Their diet mainly consists of hay, grasses, seeds, and sometimes fruit, and they have a delicate digestive system, so their diet in captivity must be carefully managed.
Physically, they have large, round ears, a bushy tail, and strong hind legs adapted for jumping and climbing rocky terrain. They are known for their playful and curious behavior, which makes them popular as exotic pets, although they require specialized care. Chinchillas also bathe in dust rather than water because their dense fur can trap moisture, leading to fungal infections if it gets wet.
Wild chinchillas are endangered due to habitat destruction and historic overhunting, but captive populations exist worldwide, often bred for pets or fur. They can live 10 to 20 years in captivity with proper care.
This Bust is 15cm tall.
