A cobra is a type of venomous snake best known for its ability to spread the skin of its neck into a distinctive hood when threatened. Cobras belong primarily to the genus Naja, though other related snakes, such as the king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), are also commonly called cobras. These reptiles are native to Africa and Asia, where they inhabit a range of environments including forests, grasslands, and agricultural areas.
Cobras are generally slender, elongated snakes, with lengths ranging from about 1 to 2 meters for many species, though the king cobra can grow up to 5.5 meters, making it the world’s longest venomous snake. Their hood, formed by elongated ribs and loose skin, is one of their most recognizable features, displayed as a defensive behavior to appear larger and more intimidating to predators.
As venomous snakes, cobras deliver a neurotoxic venom through their fangs, which can cause paralysis and potentially death in prey or, in severe cases, humans. Some species, like the spitting cobras, can eject venom from their fangs in a fine spray aimed at the eyes of a threat, causing intense pain and temporary or permanent blindness if not treated. Despite their dangerous reputation, cobras usually avoid humans and will only attack if cornered or provoked.
Cobras play an important role in ecosystems as predators of rodents, frogs, and other small animals, helping to maintain balance in the food chain. They also hold significant cultural symbolism, particularly in South Asia, where they are associated with mythology, spirituality, and protection. In Hindu tradition, cobras are linked to deities such as Shiva and Vishnu, often depicted as sacred guardians.
