The Continental Bulldog, often simply called the “Conti,” is a relatively new dog breed that originated in Switzerland in the early 2000s. It was created by breeder Imelda Angehrn, who wanted to develop a healthier alternative to the traditional English Bulldog while still keeping the Bulldog’s distinctive appearance and temperament. The English Bulldog had long been plagued with severe health issues due to heavy breeding for exaggerated physical traits, including breathing difficulties, joint problems, and birthing complications. Angehrn crossed the English Bulldog with the Olde English Bulldogge and other similar breeds, carefully selecting for sounder structure, stamina, and overall vitality, eventually producing what became known as the Continental Bulldog.
Physically, the Continental Bulldog is a medium-sized, muscular, and compact dog, usually weighing between 20–30 kilograms (45–65 pounds). It retains the strong, broad head and expressive face of the Bulldog family but with fewer exaggerations. Its muzzle is longer than that of the English Bulldog, improving airflow and reducing respiratory issues. The breed has a powerful but athletic build, with a balanced stance that allows for more agility and endurance than its heavier English cousin. Its coat is short, smooth, and comes in a wide range of colors and patterns, often featuring white with brindle, fawn, or red markings.
Temperamentally, the Continental Bulldog is known for being loyal, affectionate, and steady. Like most Bulldog types, it tends to be people-oriented, forming close bonds with its family and often showing a calm, easygoing nature indoors. At the same time, the Conti is more active and playful than the English Bulldog, making it suitable for families who enjoy outdoor activities. It is intelligent and trainable, though sometimes stubborn, so consistent but gentle training works best.
While still relatively rare outside of Europe, the Continental Bulldog has been officially recognized as a breed in Switzerland and Germany and is slowly gaining popularity in other countries. It is appreciated for being a healthier, more versatile Bulldog with fewer of the extreme features that limit the lifestyle of traditional Bulldogs.
