The Dogue de Bordeaux, also known as the French Mastiff, is a large, muscular dog breed originating from France. It is one of the oldest French breeds, with roots tracing back thousands of years, historically used for guarding, hunting large game, and pulling carts. This breed is particularly known for its massive head, strong jaw, and deeply wrinkled face, giving it a distinctive, expressive appearance. Adult males typically weigh between 110–150 pounds (50–68 kg) and stand about 23–27 inches (58–69 cm) tall at the shoulder, while females are slightly smaller.
Dogue de Bordeaux dogs have a short, fine coat that comes in shades of fawn, from a light tan to a darker red. Despite their imposing size and appearance, they are known for being affectionate, loyal, and protective of their families. They often form strong bonds with their owners and can be very gentle with children, although early socialization and training are crucial to manage their natural guarding instincts.
Health-wise, the breed is prone to certain issues common in large dogs, including hip dysplasia, heart problems, and a relatively short lifespan of around 5–8 years. They require moderate exercise and enjoy activities that allow them to bond with their family, but their massive build means strenuous activity should be monitored.
In temperament, a Dogue de Bordeaux is courageous and alert, making them excellent family guardians, but they are generally calm and somewhat sedentary indoors.
