A donkey is a domesticated animal that belongs to the horse family, Equidae, and is scientifically known as Equus africanus asinus. Donkeys are closely related to horses and zebras but have distinct physical and behavioral traits. They typically have long ears, a short, upright mane, and a tail more similar to a cow’s than a horse’s. Donkeys come in a variety of colors, usually shades of gray, brown, black, or white.
Donkeys are known for their strength, endurance, and sure-footedness, which makes them excellent pack animals and beasts of burden, especially in rough or arid terrain. Unlike horses, donkeys are more cautious and deliberate in their movements, which has sometimes been misinterpreted as stubbornness. In reality, they are highly intelligent and will refuse to do something if they sense danger or feel unsure.
They are social animals, often forming close bonds with other donkeys, horses, or even humans. Donkeys communicate through braying—a loud, distinctive call—as well as through body language like ear positioning and tail movements. They are herbivores, feeding mainly on grasses, shrubs, and other vegetation, and they have efficient digestive systems that allow them to survive on sparse food and water, making them well-suited to harsh environments.
Donkeys have been domesticated for thousands of years, particularly in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, and have played an important role in human agriculture, transport, and trade. Today, they continue to serve practical purposes in many parts of the world while also being kept as companion animals or used in conservation grazing programs.
