Aarakocra are avian humanoids in Dungeons & Dragons, resembling humanoid birds with wings and talons. Native to the Elemental Plane of Air, they are often explorers, scouts, or guardians of sacred sites. Their bodies are covered in feathers, typically in shades of white, gray, or brown, and they have sharp beaks and keen eyesight.
Standing around five feet tall with a wingspan of ten to twelve feet, Aarakocra are one of the few playable races with the ability to fly. Their natural flight grants them exceptional mobility, allowing them to soar over obstacles and strike from above. However, their lightweight bones make them somewhat fragile compared to other races.
Aarakocra society is often communal and nomadic, favoring high mountain peaks or floating islands where they build nests rather than traditional settlements. They revere the wind and sky, often worshiping deities of air and freedom, such as the primordial Akadi. Some serve as guardians against elemental threats, particularly the powerful beings known as the Princes of Elemental Evil.
While generally peaceful, Aarakocra have little patience for those who threaten their homes or disrupt the balance of nature. Their outlook is shaped by their celestial origins, and many see themselves as protectors of the sky, maintaining a strong connection to their home plane.
As adventurers, Aarakocra are often rangers, monks, or clerics, using their speed and agility to great effect. Their natural flight makes them excellent scouts and archers, though their hollow bones and lack of durability can make them vulnerable in prolonged combat. Their personalities tend toward the aloof or distant, as they often struggle to relate to ground-dwelling races. Despite this, they make loyal allies, particularly to those who share their love of freedom and the open skies.
