In Dungeons & Dragons, an alicorn is traditionally associated with unicorns, referring specifically to the magical horn of such a creature. This term originates from real-world mythology, where “alicorn” denotes the substance of a unicorn's horn, believed to possess powerful healing and purification properties. In various editions of D&D, the horn of a unicorn is sometimes used as a rare and potent material component for spells, potions, or magical artifacts, often tied to healing, resurrection, or protection against poison and disease. Because unicorns are celestial or fey beings, their alicorns may also carry divine or planar significance, making them highly sought after by both benevolent and malevolent forces.
However, in some fantasy settings outside of D&D, an "alicorn" describes a winged unicorn, a hybrid of pegasus and unicorn. While D&D does not commonly use this term to define a creature, homebrew settings and third-party supplements occasionally introduce alicorns as unique or divine beings, often with abilities reflecting their dual nature—flight, healing magic, and teleportation. If such a creature were to exist in a D&D campaign, it would likely be an extraordinarily rare celestial or fey entity, possibly serving deities of light, nature, or purity.
Because unicorns are sacred beings in D&D, harming one or attempting to harvest its alicorn would be seen as a grievous act, likely invoking divine wrath or curses. Dungeon Masters might use the concept of an alicorn as a quest item, a relic of a fallen unicorn, or the key to an ancient spell. Whether as a powerful artifact or the defining trait of a mystical creature, the alicorn carries a strong association with purity, divine power, and magic, making it an intriguing element in D&D lore.
