An Armored Horse is a warhorse fitted with protective metal or leather barding, used primarily in medieval warfare to safeguard both itself and its rider from weapons in battle. This type of horse, often referred to as a destrier or charger, was specially bred and trained for combat, possessing great strength, stamina, and discipline to carry the heavy load of both its armor and that of its rider.
The armor, known as barding, covered key parts of the animal’s body such as the head, neck, chest, and flanks. Metal plates, chainmail, or hardened leather were shaped to allow freedom of movement while deflecting blows from swords, arrows, and lances. The head was often protected by a chamfron, which could include decorative crests or engravings to display the knight’s heraldry. The chest was shielded by a peytral, and the flanks and hindquarters were covered by flanchards or cruppers, depending on the level of protection desired.
Because a fully equipped knight and horse could weigh over half a ton combined, these animals were trained to remain calm under pressure, respond precisely to commands, and even charge directly into battle lines. Their presence created both a physical and psychological advantage, as the sight and sound of armored cavalry could terrify infantry.
Outside of warfare, armored horses were used in jousting tournaments, where they became symbols of chivalric prestige and noble status. The armor itself was often polished, decorated, or etched, turning a practical defense into a work of craftsmanship. By the late Renaissance, as firearms made heavy armor less effective, the use of armored horses declined, though they remain an enduring emblem of medieval knighthood and the art of mounted combat.
