An Astral Djinni is not a standard creature in the core editions of Dungeons & Dragons, but the idea of such a being can be drawn from the established lore of djinn and the Astral Plane. Djinn in D&D are elemental genies native to the Plane of Air, powerful beings of storm and wind, often proud, mercurial, and deeply tied to the freedom of the skies. The Astral Plane, on the other hand, is a silvery void outside time, a realm of thought, dreams, and passage between the planes of existence. An Astral Djinni is therefore best imagined as a rare offshoot or evolution of a djinni that has somehow been permanently altered by prolonged exposure to the Astral realm. This transformation reshapes both its nature and its powers.
An Astral Djinni embodies the airy grace of its elemental kin but overlays it with the strange timelessness of the Astral Plane. Unlike a normal djinni, which revels in storms, winds, and natural freedom, an Astral Djinni becomes a creature of mind and spirit. It may appear more translucent or radiant, its form seeming half-thought, half-substance, with eyes like distant stars and a voice that resonates like an echo across eternity. These beings no longer breathe, age, or hunger, because the Astral Plane strips such needs from them. They drift between realities, unbound by the natural flow of time, and often serve as guides, messengers, or enigmatic tricksters to travelers who dare to cross the Astral void.
In terms of demeanor, an Astral Djinni is even more aloof than a typical genie. Its thoughts wander across planes, and it may speak cryptically, referencing events from past or future with equal ease. Its magic reflects this otherworldliness, often manifesting in illusions, psychic effects, or teleportation. While not inherently hostile, such a djinni values its freedom above all else, and any attempt to bind it can provoke wrath on a cosmic scale. They are most often encountered by adventurers traversing the Astral Sea, where the djinni’s curiosity might draw it to mortals, either as a temporary ally or as a whimsical test of their resolve.
