In Dungeons & Dragons, a Baby Dragon refers to a young dragon that is in its earliest stages of growth, typically around the age of one to five years. While dragons in D&D are known for their immense power, Baby Dragons are much smaller and less dangerous than their adult counterparts. These dragons are typically considered to be in the "Wyrmling" stage, where they are still developing their full abilities, including their breath weapon, flight, and magical powers.
A Baby Dragon's appearance is often characterized by its relatively small size, typically ranging from about 3 to 5 feet in length, depending on the type of dragon. They can have scales that reflect their type (e.g., red, blue, green, etc.), though they are often not as brilliantly colored as adult dragons. Baby Dragons are also more vulnerable than their older counterparts, with weaker physical attacks and less devastating breath weapons. Despite this, they can still pose a threat to unprepared adventurers, especially due to their inherent intelligence and cunning.
In terms of behavior, Baby Dragons are still highly territorial and can be extremely protective of their hoards or nests. They are often found in remote or hidden locations, either alone or in small groups, and can be more curious and playful compared to older dragons. Though still not fully grown, Baby Dragons exhibit many of the characteristics that will define them as they mature: greed, pride, and an innate connection to the forces of magic.
In gameplay, encountering a Baby Dragon can be a memorable experience, with adventurers needing to decide whether to fight, tame, or communicate with the creature, depending on the story and context of the campaign.
