In Dungeons & Dragons, a baby goblin is not officially described in the published rules, but it can be understood by looking at how goblins are generally presented in the lore of the game and then imagining them at their youngest stage of life. Goblins are a common humanoid creature in the game, usually depicted as small, cunning, and often malicious. They are part of the larger family of goblinoids, which also includes hobgoblins and bugbears. In most settings, goblins are portrayed as cruel scavengers who thrive in dark forests, caves, or ruins, relying on numbers and trickery to overcome their foes. Despite this often hostile presentation, they are still a living people with societies, families, and offspring. A baby goblin, then, represents the very beginning of that cycle of life.

A baby goblin would be similar in size to a human infant, but wirier and with sharper features. Their ears are usually oversized compared to their heads, giving them a distinctive look even at birth. Unlike the hardened warriors and raiders they may one day become, baby goblins are vulnerable and dependent on the care of their tribe. They are usually born into large litters, as goblins breed quickly to offset the constant danger of their harsh lives. In a goblin tribe, the young are often raised communally, with older goblins teaching them early lessons about stealth, obedience, and survival. Unlike human children, goblins are expected to grow up quickly, often being put to work at a very young age gathering food, tending fires, or watching for intruders.

From a storytelling perspective, a baby goblin presents an interesting moral dilemma in a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Adventurers who fight goblin raiders may come across the tribe’s young, forcing them to confront questions about mercy, survival, and the nature of evil. Some settings describe goblins as inherently bound to darkness through their ties to malevolent gods like Maglubiyet, while others allow for more nuance, suggesting that goblin children, like any children, are shaped by their upbringing and could potentially break away from their cruel traditions. This opens the door for unique narrative choices, such as raising a baby goblin outside of its tribe or exploring the cultural complexity of goblin society. In this way, baby goblins are not just a biological stage of life but a narrative tool that can challenge both players and Dungeon Masters to think about morality, culture, and the consequences of their actions in a fantasy world.
