In Dungeons & Dragons, a banshee is a horrifying undead creature, typically the spirit of a female elf who, in life, was consumed by vanity, pride, or some form of deep emotional torment. Because of her inability to let go of her worldly attachments and her descent into malevolence, she was cursed to exist as a banshee—an incorporeal undead being filled with sorrow and rage. This tragic origin is rooted in the idea that elves, known for their grace and beauty, fall the furthest when corrupted, making the banshee both a symbol of lost potential and a dire warning against obsession and arrogance.

Banshees are spectral beings, appearing as ghostly, translucent figures that radiate a chilling aura. They dwell in desolate places such as ruined manors, haunted forests, or forgotten tombs, often staying near the place of their death or the object of their obsession. Their mere presence can instill fear in the living, but what makes them truly dangerous is their Wail—a supernatural scream so powerful it can cause death in creatures that hear it. This Wail is not merely a physical attack but a manifestation of the banshee’s eternal anguish and bitterness. It echoes through the air, disrupting the life force of those nearby and often felling the weakest in a single moment.

In combat, banshees are formidable despite their low hit points. They are immune to most physical attacks unless the weapon is magical, and they resist many elemental forms of damage. Their incorporeal nature allows them to move through walls and float above the ground, making them difficult to trap or contain. Adventurers facing a banshee must be prepared not just for a physical fight but for a battle of will and endurance, as her presence can sap strength, inspire terror, and threaten to kill outright with a single cry.
