A Cambion in Dungeons & Dragons is a creature born from the union of a mortal and a fiend, most often a demon or devil. The term itself dates back to early editions of the game, where it described the offspring of a succubus or incubus and a human, though over time it has evolved to encompass a wider range of infernal or abyssal parentage. Cambions embody the corruption and cunning of their fiendish heritage while retaining enough mortal traits to exist in both worlds, though they rarely find acceptance in either.
In appearance, a Cambion reflects its dual nature. Their humanoid form is often marked by horns, fangs, pointed ears, red or ashen skin, and glowing eyes. Some possess wings or tails, and their voices may carry an unsettling resonance that hints at the infernal power within. Despite these monstrous traits, they can also be strikingly beautiful in a way that feels unnerving or unnatural. Their mere presence tends to inspire fascination or fear, and they are often acutely aware of the effect they have on others.
In temperament, Cambions are typically ambitious, manipulative, and hungry for power. Whether spawned by a demon of the Abyss or a devil of the Nine Hells, their lives are shaped by the schemes of their fiendish parent. Many are conceived as part of infernal bargains or dark rituals, intended to serve as instruments of corruption or conquest. Yet, not all Cambions embrace their infernal lineage. Some rebel against it, struggling to define their own morality and destiny, though this internal conflict often leaves them isolated and tormented.
In D&D lore, Cambions are powerful in their own right. They often inherit innate magical abilities, such as the power to charm, disguise, or summon flame, and possess the physical strength and resilience of their fiendish bloodline. Dungeon Masters frequently use them as villains, antiheroes, or tragic figures torn between two worlds. Whether acting as infernal warlords or reluctant outcasts, Cambions stand as a potent symbol of the struggle between mortal will and fiendish corruption—a living embodiment of temptation, ambition, and the eternal pull of darkness.
