The idea is that of a spellcaster whose arcane power is bound, restricted, or in some way shackled either by an external force or by their own flawed relationship with magic. Where a wizard freely studies spells and a sorcerer channels magic through innate talent, the Chained Arcanist is defined by constraint. Their magic does not flow smoothly; instead, it is controlled, locked, or leashed, and every act of casting becomes both a test of will and a negotiation with the forces that hold them back.

In most depictions, the Chained Arcanist’s power comes at a price. Sometimes they are prisoners who have had their magic sealed with mystical bindings.
