This is a highly detailed miniature of a Chimera Variant.

This model was created by M3DM who makes amazingly accurate models of Dungeons & Dragons creatures and is provided by Commercial License.

In Dungeons & Dragons, the chimera is a staple example of a hybrid monstrosity, a creature assembled from the parts of multiple beasts in a way that embodies chaotic design and raw savagery. By default, the classic chimera is a fearsome predator combining the body of a lion, the wings of a dragon, the head of a goat, and the head of a dragon alongside the lion’s own. This creature serves as both a mythological homage and a terrifying encounter, blending brute force, feral instincts, and magical menace into one. However, D&D designers and Dungeon Masters have long experimented with the idea of chimera variants, creatures that deviate from the standard lion-goat-dragon mixture and instead replace components with other animals or dragons to better suit a campaign’s theme.

A chimera variant keeps the defining principle of the chimera: it is an unnatural hybrid created through magical experimentation, divine curse, or sheer chaos. Where the standard chimera embodies a red dragon’s head and fiery breath, variants can substitute other chromatic or metallic dragons, changing both the appearance and breath weapon. For example, a white dragon-headed chimera would breathe a cone of frost, while a blue-headed chimera would unleash lightning. Similarly, Dungeon Masters might replace the lion’s body with that of a tiger, bear, or even more exotic predators, altering how the creature fights and how it feels thematically. The goat’s head, often considered the weakest link, can be swapped for rams, stags, or other horned beasts, turning a strange but terrifying hybrid into something that reflects the mythology or ecosystem of a given world.

These variants are not just cosmetic; they can reshape the tactical role of the monster. A frost-breathing chimera might stalk frozen mountains, while a desert-themed version could be made with a giant vulture’s body and a blue dragon’s head. Each new variant highlights the unnatural horror of creatures assembled by reckless gods, mad wizards, or ancient curses. Ultimately, a chimera variant is a flexible template that preserves the monstrosity’s iconic hybrid identity while giving Dungeon Masters freedom to craft unique threats that feel tailored to their worlds.
