In Dungeons & Dragons, the chupacabra is a predatory monstrosity inspired by Latin American folklore. Often featured in third-party supplements or unofficial bestiaries rather than core rulebooks, the D&D chupacabra is typically depicted as a cunning, reptilian beast that stalks the wilderness in search of blood. Its name, which means "goat-sucker" in Spanish, comes from its habit of draining the blood of livestock, leaving behind eerily intact corpses.

Within the game world, chupacabras are nocturnal ambush predators. They blend naturally into wild or overgrown terrain and have features like mottled scales, spines, or ridges along their backs. They are about the size of a large dog or small panther but possess supernatural stealth and a paralytic bite. Their feeding habits give them a vampiric reputation, but unlike true vampires, they lack intelligence, undead status, or the ability to charm. Despite this, their uncanny silence and preference for isolated regions make them a persistent threat to rural communities and travelers alike.

A typical encounter with a chupacabra in D&D is not unlike facing a highly mobile and elusive hunter. They often strike from hiding, targeting weak or sleeping prey. In some versions, they can smell blood from a great distance, using this to track the wounded or dying. The creature’s thirst for blood is instinctive and uncontrollable, sometimes driving it to break into settlements during lean seasons. In regions where they are known to dwell, chupacabras inspire fear not just for the physical danger they pose but for their eerie, unnatural behavior. When used well by a Dungeon Master, a chupacabra encounter can blend horror and suspense, evoking themes of isolation, helplessness, and the slow realization that something terrible is stalking the party. Though rarely a world-shaking monster, the chupacabra’s mystery and menace make it a memorable foe.
