A Cockatrice is a small but terrifying magical beast whose seemingly harmless appearance conceals one of the deadliest abilities in the world of Dungeons & Dragons. Resembling a grotesque cross between a rooster, a dragon, and a lizard, the Cockatrice is infamous for its supernatural petrifying touch. Though no larger than a turkey, these creatures have claimed the lives of countless adventurers, farmers, and explorers who underestimated their danger.
A Cockatrice possesses the feathered body and proud crest of a rooster, combined with leathery dragon-like wings and a long reptilian tail. Its sharp beak is lined with small, jagged teeth, while crimson or amber eyes gleam with unnatural intelligence. Thin scales cover its legs and tail, ending in razor-sharp talons capable of clinging to rocky cliffs, ancient ruins, and twisted forest branches. Despite its awkward appearance on the ground, it is a surprisingly agile flier, capable of short bursts of swift, darting flight.
The creature's most feared ability is its magical petrifying attack. A single peck or scratch can begin transforming living flesh into solid stone, with the effect spreading rapidly through the victim's body. Those unable to resist the curse gradually become completely petrified, frozen forever as lifelike statues. Unlike the gaze of a medusa or basilisk, the Cockatrice must make physical contact to inflict its curse, making speed and agility its greatest weapons.
Cockatrices are aggressive, territorial creatures that attack anything entering their nesting grounds. They often hunt in small flocks, overwhelming larger opponents through repeated hit-and-run attacks until one of their victims succumbs to petrification. Their nests are frequently surrounded by stone statues of unfortunate adventurers, woodland animals, and even larger monsters that failed to escape their relentless assaults.
Despite their fearsome reputation, Cockatrices are not malicious or highly intelligent. They are driven by instinct, defending their territory and hunting for food like ordinary predators. Some skilled beast tamers and eccentric wizards have even managed to domesticate them, although doing so carries enormous risk.
In a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, the Cockatrice serves as an unforgettable low- to mid-level threat, teaching adventurers that even seemingly small monsters can prove deadly. Its unique petrifying touch, unpredictable behaviour, and eerie nests filled with stone victims make every encounter tense, memorable, and filled with peril.
This model is 14.50mm tall at 32mm scale.
